Why did you choose to become a therapist?

After working in corporate management and then for an Emergency Service I saw at first hand the stress and anxiety that people experience in the workplace . This triggered my interest in counselling and mental health . I was then treated for cancer and received so much help and support to get through treatment and recovery often from people who were previously strangers . This showed me the amazing skills and empathy that we have as human beings and how we can help others . As a result when I recovered I was determined to train in a profession where I could help others and I chose counselling.

Why do you think integrative therapy is the most effective form of therapy?

There are so many ways to help people and it is important to keep an open mind and use whatever tools we have in our toolkit to help clients . Counselling is not a one size fits all process and using Integrative Therapy allows us to be flexible and adaptive in order to help our clients.

How would you describe your therapy session & approach?

I believe it’s so important for the client to feel relaxed and for me to listen closely to what the client is trying to tell me . Without judgment I stay with the client as they tell me their story . This can take time and I go at the client’s pace . I check with the client to ensure that I have fully understood them . After this initial phase I can work with the client to discover which way they wish to go . We may look at common themes that are occurring , maybe look to see if the client has a certain way of responding to situations - a way that is rooted in the past and not the present . We may find the client is finding it difficult to change things and explore why . There are infinite paths that we may explore until we find the right one . My approach is integrative and I work side by side with my client rather than taking the lead or giving advice because the client knows themselves better than anyone . I frame my work using modalities which I feel may be helpful. Most of all I provide a gentle ,kind and welcoming space for my clients to be themselves.
