    How ADHD coaching works here

    1. 1

Say what is actually going wrong

Not your symptoms, your week. Missed deadlines, unopened admin, work spilling into evenings, meetings you cannot hold in your head. That is what a coach works on.

    2. 2

Get matched with an ADHD coach, not a general one

We point you at coaches with ADHD-specific training and experience of the gap between insight and follow-through, which is where general executive coaching usually stalls.

    3. 3

Check whether it can be funded

If you are employed or self-employed, Access to Work funds ADHD coaching for many applicants and does not have to be repaid. Our guide sets out what to write to get approved.

    4. 4

Run a course, not an open-ended arrangement

Most engagements are 6 to 18 sessions with clear targets, reviewed as you go, so you can tell whether it is working. Fees are agreed with the coach direct, with no booking fee from us.

    Questions

    Straight answers

What does an ADHD coach actually do?
You bring the week that is not working and the coach works on it with you: what gets captured and where, what order things happen in, how a task gets started, and what to do when a plan falls over. Sessions are practical and you leave with something to try, not homework about your childhood.
    Does ADHD coaching work?
It helps most with the day-to-day mechanics: starting, prioritising, finishing and holding a week together. It is not a treatment for ADHD and it does not replace medication or a diagnosis, so people who also want symptom treatment usually see a clinician alongside coaching.
Do I need an ADHD diagnosis to start coaching?
No. Coaching addresses how you work rather than confirming a diagnosis, so plenty of people start while waiting for an assessment. You do usually need evidence of diagnosis for Access to Work funding, though you can apply on the basis of symptoms and their impact.
What is the difference between ADHD coaching and ADHD therapy?
Coaching is forward-facing and practical: systems, priorities, time, follow-through, work and study. Therapy treats the emotional side, including anxiety, low mood, rejection sensitivity and years of self-blame. Many people do both, and some clinicians offer both.
How much does ADHD coaching cost in the UK?
£75 to £180 a session with specialists on Take a Seat, set by the coach and paid to them directly. A typical course of 6 to 18 sessions is agreed up front so you know the total before you start.
Will Access to Work pay for my ADHD coaching?
It often does. ADHD or executive-function coaching is the most commonly awarded support under the scheme, and coaching awards are generally exempt from the employer cost-share rules, so packages are frequently funded in full. Expect four to six months from application to decision.
    Is ADHD coaching available online?
Yes, and most of it is. Sessions work well by video, which also means you are not limited to coaches in your own city. In-person work is available in the larger cities.
How long before I notice a difference?
People usually report changes in the first three or four sessions, because the early work is concrete: one reliable capture system, one planning habit, one way to start the task you have been avoiding. Durable change is what the later sessions are for.
