Health and life coaching jobs in the UK

Coaching is where prevention work is growing fastest, and where the boundary with clinical care matters most. Each page explains the credential employers actually look for.

    The short answer

Coaching is unregulated in the UK, so employers use ICF, EMCC or professional-body credentials as the quality signal. Coaches work on goals, habits and structure, and must refer on rather than treat a clinical condition.

    Frequently asked questions

Do UK coaches need a licence?

No, coaching is not a protected title in the UK. Credible employers ask for ICF, EMCC or equivalent accredited training, supervision and insurance instead.

What is the difference between a health coach and a health and wellbeing coach?

Health and wellbeing coach is a defined NHS personalised care role, usually funded through a primary care network and requiring Personalised Care Institute accredited training. Health coach is a broader, unregulated title used across private practice, employers and digital providers.

Which coaching roles pay the most in the UK?

Mental health coaching and specialist health coaching pay the most, particularly where the coach also holds an accredited therapy or clinical qualification. NHS health and wellbeing coach posts pay less at the top but include a pension and structured progression.

Where is the line between coaching and therapy?

Coaching works forward from a person's goals. If a diagnosable condition is driving the difficulty, the ethical route is a referral to a registered clinician, with coaching continuing alongside if appropriate.
